Graduating

Filed under: Blog — allen at 2:18 am on Thursday, December 15, 2005

I had the last class of my college undergrad career today. My IST 421 presentation to Hershey Foods tomorrow will be the end to it all. My 12-credit foreign language proficiency requirement (I’m still wondering how I passed) has finally been reflected on my degree audit. I got the graduation green light.

I’m graduating on December 19th 2005. I was happy at first, but now I feel slightly depressed? I don’t know. Maybe, I’ll snap out of it. I’m still not sure where I’ll be working. Originally, I was dead set on reaching a decision by the time I graduated. But I’ve come to realize that’s not necessary, for any reason.

A few graduation quotes

Of course there’s a lot of knowledge in universities: the freshmen bring a little in; the seniors don’t take much away, so knowledge sort of accumulates.
~A. Lawrence Lowell

The purpose of a liberal education is to make you philosophical enough to accept the fact that you will never make much money.

In the business world, everyone is paid in two coins: cash and experience. Take the experience first; the cash will come later.
~Harold Geneen

I will make up for all my weaknesses with self-denial.

Make Firefox run up to 30 times faster

Filed under: Technology — allen at 10:31 pm on Tuesday, December 13, 2005

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″.
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you’re on a brodband connection you’ll load pages 2-30 times faster now.

Cool Beans

In the lab most of yesterday, putting the finishing touches on our web service project and power point presentation. As I leave, Christian stops me and says there’s a call for me. So I pickup the phone and it’s Beans!

Beans and I go way back. Probably the only black person I really know. He worked in the computer lab with me for a semester maybe two years ago. He had since dropped off the radar; did some time for some unpaid tickets and drug charges. And now, he calls me and asks me to come down to the ****** Bar down on Market st for a favor. So I stop on by and he introduces me to the owner and we get down to some business. Sweet hookup for side work.

After we got our business settled, Beans and I catch up down at the bar. Turns out he’s recovering from a nasty staff infection and recently separated with his wife. A few drinks later, he asks me to go for a “ride” in his new Z. Wasn’t feeling adventurous, so I turn down his offer.. and head home.

Stress’n It

With our deadline bearing down, last morsels of hope for completing this project diminish. Just hours set us apart from our IST421 Final Deliverable Deadline (FDD). So it seems after working with Counter Productive Dave (CPD) for about an hour, the only thing he really knows how to do is Copy and Paste. Which leaves me with the actual effort intensive portion as described in the “Copy, Paste, and Customize”, (CPC) programming methodology. People will be people… periodically idiotic and stupid. (in some cases, perpetually… idiotic.. and stupid..)

Been so irrational and irritable over silly things this week. Bad bad bad bad bad! That’s finals I guess.

You Whinney little..

To the whimpering whinney idiots in my IST421 class.. You are my inspiration. You have defined a set of diametrically opposite principles which I will try my hardest NOT to live by. Thank you for that.
